Other Utilities

There are two useful utilities for Windows that are available. The first is a nice programmer's editor called ConTEXT that is a good way to view larger FASTA-formatted protein databases. The second is a utility from Microsoft that adds an "Open command window here" item to the context (right-click) menu (under the "PowerToys" tab) for XP. This is handy if you want to invoke the Python interpreter from the command line and use the command line options for the FASTA utilities. With Windows 7, holding down the shift key when right-clicking adds "Open command window here" to the context menu so there is no need to install this utility.

These (or similar) utilities may be available for other platforms or operating systems. The links above are for Windows.
